“The real wealth of a planet is in its landscape.” Frank Herbert
Thank you, District Arts Gallery for hosting my first featured artist exhibit here. I have a child's fascination for rocks and trees. I originally set my MINDSCAPES painting series to be my love letter to the great American landscape, more specifically to the geology of the Southwest, the flagged trees of the Pacific Northwest, and the rolling hills and waters of the Mid-Atlantic where I’ve lived. As I worked on this series, I read Frank Herbert’s science fiction epic “Dune” and kept watching the images sent from Mars by the Perseverance rover. I couldn’t help being influenced by the beautiful austerity of those vast spaces as well. Eventually, MINDSCAPES evolved into a more surreal memory exploration of both the landscapes I’ve hiked and the landscapes I’ve dreamed about but may never set foot on. MINDSCAPES is a deeply personal, experimental, heavily textured mixed media series sculpted in acrylic, oil, sand, rice paper, silk, salt, sawdust, coffee, oxidized copper, Dutch gold, silver, bronze and iron on canvas, wood, and Masonite. I tried to push myself way out of my comfort zone this time and enhance the world to full contrast, in its raw materials. I was born on the Caribbean coast of Panama and have lived in the U. S. since 1987. I hold a B. A. in Studio Art/Minor in Theatre from Florida State University and a M.F.A. in Set/Costume Design from the University of Michigan. I live in Loudoun County, VA, where I am a painter, photographer, production designer, freelance artist, muralist, faux finisher, and color consultant for Benjamin Moore paints. I have worked on Broadway, and in film, video, opera, dance, theatre, television, academia, illustration, interior design and visual merchandising. I have taught classes and camps at schools, art centers, including the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Temple University, Howard Community College, and University of Maryland. I have shown my art solo and collectively in galleries, wineries, libraries, restaurants, coffee shops, festivals, studio tours, and fairs across 7 states. I paint murals, selfie wings, and human and animal portraits on commission as well. Most recently, I painted a costume for the Florentine Opera in Milwaukee, gilded a maple tree ceiling for a farm, murals and faux for Elysium Ax Bar and Bia Kitchen Bistro in Purcellville, VA. I am currently designing my third fox hunting mural, a 20’ wedding banner, and a gilded dining room in Alexandria. If you would like to see more of my future work in person, I will be at the Catoctin Holiday Art Tour (CHAT) in Lovettsville, VA come fall and always on online at www.pthvisualarts.com.
